Their season is quickly becoming a shambles. Nine matches played and already four defeats compared to two all of last season. They'll hit double figures in losses this season.

This will be Rafa's last season at LFC, but I doubt he'll make it to next May without getting the sack. At this rate he'll be the first EPL manager to get the sack this season.

All of this proves that last season was an aberration after all, but what do you expect from a two man club.

Oh, and if you're going to use the excuse that Gerrard and Torres were injured, don't. United were without Rooney, Fletcher and Vidic, yet they still won.

Wow.....
A Manc comes out of hiding when their team just hangs on to beat Bolton at home and to take the pi55 out of us for losing away to a team that very nearly beat them on their own patch.
QUOTE
Manchester United moved top of the Premier League with a nervy victory over Bolton at Old Trafford.

The champions took an early lead when Michael Owen's header was deflected into his own net by Zat Knight.

After Antonio Valencia lashed home his first goal for United, the hosts looked to be cruising to the three points.

But Matt Taylor headed in from Kevin Davies' cross and Bolton began to flood forward in search of an equaliser, only to be denied by some dogged defending.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men will be mightily relieved to have secured the win, which was far from convincing but sees them go a point clear of Chelsea after the Blues were beaten at Aston Villa earlier on Saturday.

Such was their dominance, United seemed to switch off mid-way through the second half and were fortunate not to be punished as Bolton laid siege to their goal.

All we need now is a Gooner to come in and trump that with the fact that they have won their last too games.

What's happening at Liverpool? I haven't really seen much of them, and didn't see last night's performance - but another loss last night in the Champions League sees them in a precarious position for not qualifying from their group (unthinkable) plus four league defeats already, with Man Utd (I think that's what I heard?) up next?

Resident Scousers... what's happening? Is this just a little blip which Rafa will correct soon, is it because of the Torres injury, and Gerrard coming off injured last night? Are Liverpool missing Alonso? Or are there other reasons not mentioned here?

We ARE missing Alonso and we cant play without Torres and Gerrard.....replacements just ain't good enough.

Lyon look a decent side but we should be winning these games...odly enough after Gerrard went off we played better and could have been 3 up before half time, but yet again we conceed two goals.

Simply put: we just ain't good enough!!!

For the last 20 minutes of the fisrt half Fabio looked like he was on a mission to destroy Lyon all on his lonesome.....
If only 2 or 3 of the rest of the team had shown they had the same intentions we would have seen them off with ease.

I agree with Scott on the Alonso front but think we need to give Aqualani a chance to show what he is made of.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing him in action.......but then I'm an 'glass half full' kind of guy. TalkFootball/giggle[1].gif

Fair points.

And Aquilani is a good player. Excellent passing range and known for having a bit of an eye for goal. Could make all the difference.

Is he back fully fit now?

What's the thoughts on Carragher? There have been some knee-jerk reactions suggesting he's starting to make errors regularly (unthought of over the past 8-10 years! apart from his own goals for his beloved Spurs, of course!) - are these a bit uncalled for and Carragher is still class?

Aquaman should play for the reserves tonight and might even be in the running for a place on the bench on Sunday.

Carra really is going through a bad patch at the moment but hopefully he'll pull through....if not then martin and Danny will be in the centre of defence and Carra will just have to take a seat on the bench.

Reason for edit....
ust checked and the reserve game is live on LFC tv channel which is free on Sky and XL package on Virgin.
If I get the chance I might just give it a watch to check out Aqualani......
Kick off at 7 for anyone interested.

4 on the trot. Can't remember the last time that happened to Liverpool.

Lots to fix. Rafa has lots of eggs in that Torres/Gerrard basket. Very effective when fit but problematic when not.

Agree completely that Xabi is missed and would love to see what Aquilani can do.

Still all to play for. Carra will come good. Pepe will also play better than he has.

Sunny days ahead. TalkFootball/thumbsup2.gif

I try not to take an interest in the EPL at the moment. Except for fantasy leagues etc. As it seems impossible for any team to displace the top four, it is sad that LFC, the least hated of the top four by me, can't get their act together and win the EPL. Go City? or Spurs?

Good to hear from you, KD.

FACT: LFC are the new Man City. They only raise their game for United.

FACT: Last season was an aberration for LFC.

FACT: LFC are well and truly out of it already.

FACT: FSW takes off better players with the match in the balance and loses.

FACT: LFC will not make the CL this season.

FACT: FSW complains about a lack of funds, but he spent 40 million last summer.

FACT: LFC may win the Europa League this season.

Almost forgot, KD.

Let's face it. This season is a disaster for LFC and even you know it.

Last weekend's victory for LFC was their World Cup Final. 6 losses in 7 matches is woeful.

Shout about Ronaldo all you like. United are actually 4 points ahead from where they were after 11 matches last season and have scored more; without Ronaldo.

If you want to talk about Ronaldo's goals, let's talk about Torres. Without him, LFC would be hovering just above the relegation zone. TalkFootball/Yaboo.gif

Not to worry, Torres will be playing with Ronaldo soon after FSW leaves LFC.

Where did I read that a team can lose 6 this season and still win the league? TalkFootball/wtf1.gif

Chelsea has lost away to Wigan, the team that was rounded 4-0 by Pompey yesterday
TalkFootball/OMG!.gif They may lose more
It is not so much that Man United continues to win and score more (to be better off relative to last season at this point), but it is the laboured manner of their victories/draw at home against weaker teams that will make other hope
Arsenal cannot hold onto 2 goal leads against relegation candidates (sorry AXE)
Man City cannot defend despite their expensively assembled defensive unit
And King's knees are creaking under him
It will be a wide open campaign at least until March... TalkFootball/cheerleader.gif though the relegation battles seem straightforward this year

I'm sure this years EPL winner will win it with the lowest points total in the history of the league.

With this much parity, the top teams will be taking more points off each other than ever before.

Also, teams like Sunderland are better and will take points from better teams especially when those teams have played a midweek CL match.

Biggest disappointment was the general lack of urgency as the match wore on. Given the lack of pace at the back and the dominant possession, Liverpool's defenders were always going to be susceptible to the counter. However, after Torres brought them back into the match with a moment of brilliance, I did not see any of the typical surge in energy that accompanies most clubs when they get back into a match.

IMHO, that new Greek defender is a not the answer. I could have scored in the space that Kyrgiakos and Insua left for Zamora. It was not as if they were trailing him on the break. He jogged right between them for pete sake! It looked like me playing tennis with my old doubles partner..."you got it...no, you take it...no! YOU take it" On that performance, we never amounted to much either. TalkFootball/eusa_wall.gif

Long season.

There's too much of a reliance on Torres.

LFC rely on him to score goals and the players rely on his psychological presence in regards to how he affects the opposition when he plays. The team seems to play with more confidence when he is on the pitch. The minute he is substituted, the team is worse off in terms of goal production and mental strength.

Essentially, LFC are a very fragile club when Torres doesn't play.

All teams are a bit more suspect when their top dogs don't play.

The decision to take Torres off, or to play him in the first place if he had a groin injury, was not great.

I feel for Liverpool though, clearly Mr Benitez favours the Champions League over the Premier League.

Hamann urges Reds to back Benitez

Former Liverpool star Dietmar Hamann says Reds boss Rafael Benitez is the right man to turn their fortunes around despite six defeats in seven games.

Hamman, who played under Benitez at Anfield, has dismissed suggestions that the Spaniard should be sacked.

"People calling for Rafa's head are being very premature," Hamann told BBC Sport. "He has been there five years and has improved them every season.

"Rafa has got everything a top-class manager needs, he will turn it around."

Defeat at Fulham on Saturday means Liverpool are on their worst run for more than 50 years and they face a crucial week in their season as they travel to Lyon in the Champions League on Wednesday and host Birmingham in the Premier League on Monday.

Losing at Lyon would leave Liverpool's hopes of reaching the last 16 in Europe hanging by a thread, while they have already lost five of their 11 league matches this season - including a 3-1 reverse at Fulham on Saturday.
QUOTE
Only Rafa knows how fit players are - it's not for anyone else to judge
Dietmar Hamann

Ex-Reds star Ronnie Whelan was quoted by RTE on Monday as saying "it's all gone wrong with the manager" and Benitez's days at Anfield are "numbered", while former striker Stan Collymore also said the former Valencia coach should be sacked.

But Hamann, who played a pivotal role as a substitute in Liverpool's stunning Champions League victory over AC Milan in Istanbul in 2005, says his former club must stick with Benitez.

"It's almost the first time in his five-year period at Anfield where they've had a bad spell like this," added Hamann. "Every year Rafa has gradually improved Liverpool, every year he has taken them forward.

"There are still another 27 games left in the league and while I don't think they can win it after the start they have made, there is plenty of time to get into that top four.

"The team is good enough to pull through. They were pretty unlucky at Fulham - they could have been ahead at half-time and both the sendings off were harsh, sometimes things just don't go your way.

"But all they need are a couple of good results and a couple of key players to be fit again and once they've won once or twice everything will be fine again."

Whelan heavily criticised Benitez's decision to take star striker Fernando Torres off after 63 minutes of the defeat at Craven Cottage with the score 1-1, but Hamann dismissed the Irishman's comments.

"I don't think you can blame the manager for taking Torres off when he's clearly not 100% fit - maybe Torres asked to be taken off, who knows?" said Hamann.

"It's just ridiculous that people are coming out and saying these things when only the manager knows how fit people are, only he is in charge of that team. I don't think that's up to anyone else to judge.

"I think this game in Lyon on Wednesday is more important than any of the league games they have played recently.

"Financially for Liverpool it is vital for them to reach the last 16 of the Champions League, so at this moment in time you can see why Rafa would prioritise Wednesday's game more than Fulham away.

"There is so much time left in the league - and you saw with Manchester City drawing on Sunday that teams aren't exactly capitalising when Liverpool don't win.

"The big four all lost at least twice in their first 10 games so it seems more competitive at the top and this will work in Liverpool's favour, because you won't need quite as many points as in previous years to get into that top four.

"With Alberto Aquilani getting fit, Steven Gerrard on his way back and the fact that they won't lose any players to the African Cup of Nations in January, I think we'll see Liverpool improving from now on."
