rumours abound that Farnborough Town could be the latest to add their name, along with Scarborough (not a good time to be a Borough, I'm guessing!) to the mix of clubs to fold and start again at the bottom of the pile.

it's the usual story (and a warning to the likes of Weymouth, Salisbury and Bath City) of deluded chairman coming in, over-spending on the playing budget in the hopes of making it to the Conference and then onwards towards league football - unfortunately there's no hope of sustaining such things when the money coming in from paying fans coming through the turnstiles is not matching the extortionate wages being paid!

this also almost happened to Merthyr a few years ago under Leroy Rosenior, who over-spent on players who in the end didn't do the business... Merthyr were lucky at the time that someone came in and bailed them out. this won't be the case for some clubs...

Leroy went on to bigger things (Torquay and Brentford!) and is currently leading Sierra Leone, I think.

Weymouth and Salisbury must be racking up a debt, and it's pretty much a known fact that Bath City are at least £700,000 in the red, that is not good - when the shit hits the fan.

when will clubs learn?

it's been confirmed today:

HAYES have received a reprieve from relegation out the Conference League.

They will play in the newly renamed Blue Square Southern Division in place of Farnborough Town, whose request for CVA was rejected.

It means Farnborough, who finished in the middle of the Conference South table last season, have had to reform and start again as a new club down the pyramid, in Southern League Division One.

Hayes, who occupied the final relegation place in the Conference South last season, automaticall take their place in the Blue Square Southern Division next season.

The full league will be: Basingstoke Town; Bath City; Bishop's Stortford; Bognor Regis Town; Braintree Town; Bromley; Cambridge City; Dorchester Town; Eastbourne Borough; Eastleigh Fisher Athletic; Hampton & Richmond; Havant & Waterlooville; Hayes; Lewes; Maidenhead United; Newport County; St Albans City; Sutton United; Thurrock; Welling United; Yeading.

B*stard Farnborough Town, who went out of business as stated in this thread back in May 2007 are currently looking good to get back where they were 2 years ago, top of the Southern Premier and 9 points clear of Merthyr, though Merthyr have a game in hand.

Not much of a punishment, is it? Relegated a couple of divisions and be back as you were within 2 years, and debt free to boot! It's alright for some...

Just came across this thread. There was to be no fairytale for Farnborough!

They topped the Southern Premier league for about 95% of the season, and they ended up bottling it in the playoffs!

They were in the playoffs largely due to The Martyrs! They were beating us late in the in the penultimate league game of the season, which would have seen them climb back above Corby Town to the summit.

We equalised late on, to pandemonium on the W*nk Bank! Resulting in Farnborough finishing second behind Corby. And then they lost in the playoffs!

So, fingers crossed, we'll face the trip south this up coming season, down to Farnborough. Lovely!
