George was a beautiful and striking genius

He was most naturally gifted player the world has ever seen to this day even Pele acknowledged it. He could mesmerize and dazzle the most challenging of opponents with consummate ease and grace. He was that good that even the hard men struggled to get close enough to foul him, at times he was virtually untouchable.

He had two wonderful feet with perfect balance, blinding pace, brilliant in the air, he could tackle and was very brave. George had everything, we were very blessed and privileged to have him at Old Trafford.

He was poetry in motion, he was solid gold, he was our Georgie Best.

R.I.P LEGEND

One of the advantages of being a bit older than most of you is that I got to see George Best play. He was a genius...
Much will be made of his 'wasted' talent and how he squandered his genius, but who of us is perfect?
On a football pitch, George Best entertained and dazzled those fortunate enough to watch...even the opposition fans. For anyone who loves football, Best is and was a legend.
Maradonna was another genius, some say better than Best, but I hate him with a passion, despite his genius.
I could never hate George Best. Thats the measure for me.........

Rest in Peace George..and thank you.

I dare say that every match played this weekend in the UK and the Republic of Ireland will observe a silence before kick of as a mark of respect and remembrance for George. I hope that all on TF will too, even if we are not attending a game.

One of the games natural geniuses, he will be remembered by the footballing community for his skill and passion on the pitch, not his antics off it.

I will be raising a glass for George this evening...as inappropriate as that may be. My thoughts are with his family and all Manchester United and Northern Ireland supporters...

George...may you have more peace in the hereafter than you did during your life.

a sad day..

as a kid of 5 in 1970 I had 3 Heroes, Scottish racing driver Jim Clark,Rangers & Scotland striker Colin Stein, and the 5th Beatle George Best. I was thrilled when George came to Scotland to play for Hibs in the late 70's, I went 4 times to see Hibs that year, not bad for a Rangers supporter, but to see the man who graced my bedroom wall along with my other heroeswas too good a chance to miss. He may have been at the end of his career but those days stayed long in my memory.
Todays announcement was expected but still put a lump in my throat, we have lost a man of great character as well as genius, god bless you Georgie boy, and as I said.......a sad day sad.gif

on a local radio show in the eighties you had too pick your 4 favourite dinner guests, I won by picking Olly Reed, Ian Botham,Harvey Smith, & George Best. All agreed that not much eating would get done but the wine and the patter would flow.

RIP George.

The man ruled the pitch when he was on it, it's just such a shame that alcohol ruled his life off it. Hopefully people remember him for the football. TalkFootball/Respect.gif

May he rest in peace now.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, Scotch in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming ~ WOO HOO what a ride!

He lived!

A loveable rogue... a true legend. RIP Georgie.

QUOTE (theage.com.au)
This week the British media remembered him at his best. In The Observer, journalist Bill Elliott described his 1976 World Cup game for Northern Ireland against Holland, then nearly the world's grea-*test*-('") side, with Johan Cruyff acknowledged as the world's best.

Asked by Elliott before the game if Cruyff was greater than him, Best, whose grea-*test*-('") days were already behind him, promised to "nutmeg" the Dutchman the first chance he got.

Five minutes into the game, Best - who had run onto the pitch carrying a red rose that a blonde woman had handed to him as he emerged from the tunnel - took the ball wide.

Instead of going straight for goal he turned infield, "weaved his way past at least three Dutchmen and found his way to Cruyff. He took the ball to his opponent, dipped a shoulder twice and slipped it between Cruyff's feet. As he ran round to collect it and run on, he raised his right fist into the air."

He had answered the journalist's question.

RIP Georgie, a true footballing legend. I remember reading about him while he was starring with Manchester United. I did not get to see him until he moved to the North American Soccer League. Over here he played for Los Angeles Aztecs, Fort Lauderdale Strikers and San Jose Earthquakes. In fact I still have one of his games with Fort Lauderdale on tape. Even though he had lost a step his talent was still very much evident.
