England mourn Trueman
Saturday Jul 01 2006 01:56
Former England and Yorkshire fast bowling legend Fred Trueman has died at the age of 75 after a short battle with lung cancer.

Trueman was the first man to take 300 Test wickets, reaching the mark with the dismissal of Neil Hawke against Australia at The Oval in 1964.

He finished his career with 307 Test wickets from just 67 matches, at an astonishingly low average of 21.57.

Trueman made his Test bow in 1952 against India on home turf at Headingley and ended his career 13 years later against New Zealand.

In first-class cricket he took well over 2,000 wickets in more than 600 games, earning himself the suitable nickname Fiery Fred.

RIP Fred a true England cricket star.
