MartyrToTheCause- 05-24-2007
Team: Carson, P Neville, Shorey, King, Dawson, Lennon, Jenas, Bentley, Barry, Owen, Smith.
with King, Dawson, Lennon and Jenas all starting it's a pretty strong Spurs contingent for this warm up game on Friday.
for me, Defoe should be in there too - why the hell is Alan Smith in this team? Defoe scored 10 Premiership goals this season, worth a crack at proving himself worthy of a place in the starting 11 for the full team I'd say.
swindonforever- 05-24-2007
probably because owen and defoe probably wouldnt go well together whereas owen and smith would
MartyrToTheCause- 05-24-2007
Owen and Smith go perfectly together - about 10 games between them this season... great!

This could be the reason he ain't in the B squad or why he shouldn't be in the full squad either...

Not exactly world class....even taking into account mostly sub appearances!
MartyrToTheCause- 05-25-2007
and I suppose Alan Smith has been prolific for England, has he?
12 out of 16 appearances for England were as substitute for Defoe - where mostly he was brought on for the last 8 minutes by Sven, the ever generous England manager!
MartyrToTheCause- 05-25-2007
the top English scorers in the Premiership this season:
Rooney - 14
Bent - 14
Lampard - 11
Defoe - 10
Crouch - 9
Lita - 7
Make of these stats what you will.

Thats just the premiership....when given the chance for England he's done F*** All!
MartyrToTheCause- 05-26-2007
he's barely been given an opportunity - 12 out of 16 appearances off the bench?! says it all really...
if he'd been given more opportunities and treated properly I think his international career would have been a little more successful.
I mean look at Robbie Fowler's international career - not great - does that mean Robbie Fowler is shite?!
England have a tendency of not getting the best out of strikers...

Fowler 10 games more and 6 goals more...1st Mexico 2 - 0 Robbie scored his 1st goal for England in the 55th minute on March 29, 1997.
2nd Cameroon 2 - 0 Robbie scored in the 45th minute on November 15, 1997.
3rd Ukraine 2 - 0 Robbie scored in the 44th minute on May 31, 2000.
4th Mexico 4 - 0 Robbie scored against Mexico again in the 14th minute on May 25, 2001.
5th Albania 2 - 0 Robbie scored in the 88th minute on September 5, 2001.
6th Italy 1 - 2 Robbie scored in the 63rd minute. This goal is his 1st national team goal since he moved to Leeds United. The match played at Elland Road on March 27, 2002.
Robbie also had a chance to play for England team at Anfield against Paraguay on April 17, 2002. Robbie helped England to get the 4th goal by crossing the ball to goal & it touched Paraguay's defender before going into the goal so it was an own goal.
7th Cameroon 2 - 2 Robbie scored in the 90th minute on May 26, 2002. This match played at Kobe, Japan few days before the World Cup 2002 began. Robbie had an opportunity to play in his first World Cup in the 2nd half in the game England vs. Denmark.

Defoe might play 10 (full games) more for England and score 6 goals yet - depends if he gets lucky and gets to play against the likes of Jamaica.
actually, come to think of it those stats for Defoe aren't right.
Defoe scored for England in the Euro 2008 qualifiers against Andorra.
his current England record is 3 goals with 24 caps - always best to check when the stats were last updated.
it doesn't change the fact that Defoe very rarely gets more than 15 minutes off the bench in an England shirt, mind you. either Sven/Steve McClaren see something in him which makes them think he's not quite good enough, or Sven/Steve are f*cking idiots for not giving him a fair crack at the whip.
Robbie Fowler was a far better striker than 7 goals in 26 internationals too...

Those stats are from....
http://www.thefa.com/England/SeniorTeam/Pl...ham+Hotspur.htmIt doesn't say when it was last updated....but it must be fairly upto date cos it has the squad for Israel/Andorra.
Defoe is in it and if you click on his name it brings the page those stats are from.
So the FA must be wrong as well as me.
Still don't change the fact that he ain't good enough for England and with a fit Owen and Rooney available he won't/shouldn't be in the squad.
MartyrToTheCause- 05-26-2007
sure... I can't be arsed, it's pointless.
scouser180- 05-26-2007
England have sent home Ben Foster and called in Scott Carson and Robert Green.
At the end of the season Foster aggravated a knee injury from earlier in the year. He will not be fit for the forthcoming games so has returned to Manchester United for further examination and treatment. Carson, meanwhile, has been promoted from Under-21 duty.
The rest of the squad had a full training session at Carrington today and there is no other injury news to report.

anyway, apparently England 'B' won 3-1 - Smith scored 1, Downing scored 2... Michael Owen pretty anonymous throughout, apparently, which should mean he's a dead cert to start against Brazil and Estonia in the up coming internationals |
I disagree that Owen was anoymous. I thought he looked very good, sharp and fit. Helped create 2 of the goals, always seemed involved in the action, and more importantly played 90 minutes.
