I'll sort out some others for you,but that should keep you safe for now.
Does your new PC have widowsXP?
If so, the firewall comes with it..........easy to activate, but give us a shout if you have any bother..........
Cheers guys
The firewall is already set Dunc, cheers.
One other thing if you could help. I can't seem to set up my e-mail account, I'm with Tesco broadband and I want to get my e-mails through outlook express but it won't work, apparently I need the following info. It say I need the names of my incoming and outgoing e-mail servers, any Idea how I can obtain these?
Morning Glyn!
I'm at home today because of the upcoming funeral, so I wont be at VP seeing us help relegate the small heath scum!!
You need to go here and follow the instructions for setting up Outlook Express...
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/...o/oe/setup.mspxIf you have any bother, I'm about until 12, then I'll be watching the game...........
Or you could try this:
Open up Outlook and ...
On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.
Select Add a new e-mail account, and then click Next.
Select the e-mail server used for your account, and then click Next.
Note: If you are setting up an MSN e-mail account, click POP3 for MSN Internet Access version 5.3 or earlier, for MSN Explorer, click HTTP.
In the appropriate boxes, type the information given to you by your Internet service provider (ISP) or administrator. If you want to use Microsoft Outlook to connect to a Hotmail server, all you need to know is your Hotmail e-mail address and password.
Hi Dunc,
Is there any way to get the names of my incoming and out going mail server? Would it just be Tesco?
Hi Glyn,
When you opened your account with Tesco, did they give you a username and password?
This is the important bit, found at the first link I gave you...
Set Up an Outlook Express E-Mail Account
The Internet Connection Wizard makes short work of setting up your online mailbox by walking you through each step for every e-mail account you set up.
1.
Before you get going, make sure you know your email address along with the following information. (You may need to contact your ISP, Internet Service Provider, to get it.)
First, information about the e-mail servers:
•
The type of e-mail server you use: POP3 (most e-mail accounts), HTTP (such as Hotmail), or IMAP
•
The name of the incoming e-mail server
•
For POP3 and IMAP servers, the name of the outgoing e-mail server (generally SMTP)
Second, information about your account:
•
Your account name and password
(For some solid advice about making a secure password, read the Create strong passwords article.)
•
Find out if your ISP requires you to use Secure Password Authentication (SPA) to access your e-mail account—yes or no is all that's required.
2.
Start Outlook Express, and on the Tools menu, click Accounts.
If the Internet Connection Wizard starts up automatically, skip ahead to step 4.
3.
Click Add, and then click Mail to open the Internet Connection Wizard.
Mail option from the Add button
4.
On the Your Name page of the wizard, type your name as you want it to appear to everyone who gets e-mail from you, and then click Next.
Most people use their full name, but you can use any name—even a nickname—that people will recognize.
5.
On the Internet Explorer Address page, type your e-mail address, and then click Next.
6.
On the E-mail Server Names page, fill in the first block of information that you gathered from your ISP in step 1, and then click Next.
Internet Connection Wizard's E-mail Server Names
Note: If you chose HTTP as your incoming e-mail server—as for a Hotmail or MSN account—this wizard page changes slightly so you can identify your HTTP mail service provider.
7.
On the Internet Mail Logon page, type your account name and password.
Internet Connection Wizard's Internet Mail Logon
Note: If you're concerned about break-ins to your e-mail, click to clear the check in the Remember Password box. You'll then be prompted for the password each time you send or retrieve mail.
8.
Click Next, and then click Finish.
You're ready to send your first e-mail!
Unsure if your new e-mail account is working? Send an e-mail message to a friend. If they get the message, your account is ready to roll! But if you run into problems setting up your account, Outlook Express offers help. Search for troubleshooting topics from Contents and Index on the Help menu.
I'll give it a go when I have more time, got to go to the girlfriends parents for dinner.
Cheers for the help mate and I hope Villa trounce Smallheath to send them down with the Boggies.
LOL,Cheers mate.If you have any trouble when you get back, PM me your username given by your ISP and I'll enter it in outlook for you...(minus your password of course, and I'll do a screen capture of it, so you can see how it should look...........and I'llpost the image for you to copy...........enjoy your lunch mate.......and SOTC!!!
Here's a scrrenshot of my settings for outlook using a POP3 server...Yours will probably be the same but your ISP user will be different......Mine is ntl as you see. If you enter the URL they gave you , similar to mine and put SMTP in the box for outgoing server, like I have, you should be ok........
Hi Dunc,
I can now send e-mails with outlook but I can't receive them, when I first log on to outlook it read the following message:
The host 'tesco.net' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: 'tesco.net', Server: 'tesco.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D
Hi Glyn, bear with me mate,I'm ever so slightly pissed!!
Is your server tesco.net?
What is the username you chose?
On the outgoing server did you enter...SMTP.tesco.net?
