Ska legend Desmond Dekker has died at his home in Surrey aged 64. It is thought that he had a heart attack.
Dekker, born born Desmond Adolphus Dacres, was best known for his hit song 'The Isrealites' performed with his backing band The Aces. This had been a hit in the UK and Jamaica long before Bob Marley released a record, and paved the way for the reggae and ska movement in the UK in the 60's. He also provided many of the tracks for the cult film 'The Harder they Come'.
At the time of his death, Dekker was still touring, and was thought to be at the peak of his fitness.
The inspiration for several of my favourites band, most notably The Specials, and one of the old school Godfathers of Ska.
