Taking a clue from the weekend's dramatic results accross Europe( Barca 3-0 vs RM, Rangers 2-0 vs Celtic to name a the big 2) and the overall performances of defending champions accross the continent, a few look likely to retain their crowns.
Werder Bremen in Germany are not making any effort to stay up with the pace setter, Milan in Italy is chasing JUve, Valencia are more likely to fight relegation in Spain and Arsenal in England has embarked on a an early winter hibbernation. Other than Celtic, Llyon and (how is is Porto doing?) Europe is more likely to see new champions this season accross the continent.
Or is it too early for such a conclusion?
It's just so hard to retain a title, because any big club that doesn't win the league strengthens its weak areas every close season until they do, while the winning team doesn't see any need to reinforce. Also sometimes like in the case of Valencia or Porto the winning manager fancies a new challenge and the new manager takes a while to settle. Of course it's too early to decide on the title winners this season, but in general there is truth in your post.
