Hearts clinch Champions League place
Wed 03 May, 10:12 PMGLASGOW (Reuters) - Hearts clinched a Champions League place for the first time with a 1-0 win over Aberdeen in the Scottish Premier League on Wednesday.
Paul Hartley scored the winner with a second-half penalty after Aberdeen defender Zander Diamond handled on the line and escaped with just a yellow card from referee Stuart Dougal.
Aberdeen's Scott Severin was sent off for a two-footed lunge at Bruno Aguilar with 11 minutes left at Tynecastle.
With one game left, Hearts have 74 points from 37 games and cannot be caught by third-placed Rangers who have 70 after their 2-1 win over Hibernian on Tuesday.
"It's magnificent," Hartley told BBC radio. "We didn't play particularly well tonight, but that's what it's all about...the Champions League.
"We deserved it and I am delighted. It means everything to me. It is what you dream of as a kid."
Hearts captain Steven Pressley told BBC Radio: "I believed in (Lithuanian owner) Vladimir Romanov and it has come true.
"These supporters have been starved of this type of success for some time. But we have come a long way in 10 months and it is a fantastic achievement for us."
