Former England cricketer and Pakistan and South Africa team coach Bob Woolmer was found dead in his hotel room in Jamica on Sunday afternoon. It is suspected that he died of an heart attack, but in line with Jamaican law his body must undergo a post mortem before full details can be released.

This has really overshadowed what has been a great tournament so far. Bob will be a massive loss to the game, he was a pioneer of the one-day tournaments and was, by all accounts, a great bloke. It really takes the shine off what was, for me, a fantastic night, watching the minnows of Ireland beat Pakistan...now, it seems that result may have contributed to Bob's death. A bloody shame.

apparently Bob Woolmer's death is being treated as suspicious, and is being investigated further after his post-mortem yielded no conclusion.

why did Inzaman Ul-Haq resign from his captaincy and from the team after this happened? - that's the question I'd be asking, it's a weird one.

Very sad indeed. sad.gif

There are rumours that he had 'marks on his neck'.

I sincerely hope he did die of natural causes and not at the hands of someone just because of Pakistan's dire performance in this World Cup. TalkFootball/praying.gif

The rumours are that if he died of anything other than natural causes it was either suicide or linked to a match fixing scandal.

I hope for his families sake it was neither.

Jamaican police authorities have confirmed that Bob Woolmer was murdered. The post mortem results showed that he was strangled, and there is still a possibility that he was poisoned.

This is the biggest thing that has happened in sport since the murder of Andreas Escobar. The most obvious suggestion at the moment is that Bob was killed by someone with a vested interest in match fixing, and perhaps that Bob has discovered some sort of match fixing ring surrounding the Pakistan team. The other possibility is that, like Escobar, someone lost a lot of money on Pakistan's defeat to Ireland and this was some kind of revenge killing.

Cricket is supposed to be a gentleman's sport. Cricket scandals used to be limited to bodyline bowling, rebel tours of South Africa and Phil Tufnell puffing on a joint whilst fielding at the boundery. Now it has slipped into the merky world of performance enhancing drugs, match fixing and murder. Quite unbelievable.

RIP Bob. Let's pray the police find out who committed this appalling crime, and clean up the game once and for all.

They resigned because they got beaten by Ireland and failed to qualify for the second round, not because of Bob's death.

Well, the police are now looking at it as a murder.

it's all a bit iffy - who'd want to kill Bob Woolmer?! it's only cricket... not the end of the world, or anything.

VickyTheGooner- 03-23-2007
If it is true that he was writing a book about match fixing then people would have gone to prison and seen their lives and their careers ruined. Big stuff.

Admittedly I'd never heard of the guy before this, but still tragic. I read a quote somewhere earlier of someone saying something like 'this has destroyed the whole world cup.' That is definitely the case, even if Ireland go all the way and win it, the tournament will be dominated by this occurance.
