A bit late, I know, but...

Barnet FA Cup dream is over

By Paul Wreyford

Barnet 0 Plymouth Argyle 2 . . .

A bumper 5,000-plus crowd saw two second-half goals end the Barnet cup dream at Underhill this afternoon.

Two late efforts gave a rather flattering look to the final score.

The Bees had more than matched their Championship visitors, but could not create enough goalscoring opportunities.

The Pilgrims needed a penalty midway through the second period to finally get their noses in front.

David Norris burst into the box after playing a one-two with Barry Hayles, only to be tripped by Joe Devera.

Hasney Aljofree kept his cool to beat Ross Flitney from the spot, but the Barnet keeper revealed after the game that he got a hand to it and was disappointed not to have kept it out.

If the opener was fortunate, the killer second was sheer class.

Sub Scott Sinclair took the ball from well within his own half and held off the challenges before pushing the ball past Flitney with seven minutes to go. It was a breathtaking piece of individual skill and worthy of winning any cup tie.

Barnet had not let anyone down and certainly deserved at least a replay.

But, despite enjoying lots of possession, they failed to create any clear-cut opportunities.

In fact, neither keeper was really -*test*-('")ed until Aljofree's penalty.

Barnet's best effort came from Adam Birchall in the 62nd minute, the striker turning his man and hitting a 25-yard shot that Luke McCormick plucked out of the air.

Once Plymouth had broken the deadlock, Barnet were forced to push forward. Kevin Gallen made the most of the space, when he latched on to a through-ball, but Flitney blocked his effort.

But the keeper, or the Barnet defence, could do nothing to stop Sinclair from wrapping it up.

Barnet manager Paul Fairclough said: "I'm consumed with pride. The performance of my players was outstanding, particularly in the first half.

"I couldn't see how they (Plymouth) were going to score, but the penalty shattered a few dreams and we lost our legs."

He added: "We've given them a real run for their money."

BARNET (4-4-2): Flitney; Devera (Allen 90), Yakubu, King, Nicolau; Cogan (Hatch 72), Hessenthaler, Bailey, Graham; Birchall, Puncheon. Subs not used: Jaimez-Ruiz, Charles, Warhurst.

Attendance: 5,204

Better luck next season lads...you did us proud TalkFootball/Respect.gif

Good to see two former Bolton trainees having a good season, Norris and Aljofree.
